Low ESR Electrolytics - meet latest
industry requirements
Oct 1, 2002
"NIC Eurotech has introduced the
NSPZR series of
radial leaded capacitors to meet the needs of next generation, low
voltage, high current, on-board regulation applications. The
solid polymer
electrolytic devices are made suitable for such applications by their
ultra-low ESR and high ripple current ratings. The NSPZR series is
available with capacitance values ranging from 180µF to 820µF and voltage
ratings of 4V DC to 16V DC. The capacitors are designed to have lead-free
and PVC-free construction, thus reducing their impact on the environment.
They are housed in nylon laminated aluminum cases in sizes that range from
8 x 11.5mm to 10 x 12.5mm. They have a specified operating temperature
range of -55°C to +105°C. The series compliments NIC''s already extensive
range of surface mount and leaded low ESR capacitors designed to meet the
latest needs of the electronics industry.

Solid Polymer Electrolytics -
alternative to Tantalum technology
Apr 2002
The expanded ultra-low ESR range of
NSP solid aluminum [solid
polymer E-Cap], SMT electrolytic
capacitors from NIC Eurotech offers a beneficial alternative to tantalum
devices in low voltage, high current, power management circuits. Typical
applications include the output filtering of switching power supplies and
voltage regulators. The improved specification NSP range has ESR values as
low as 0.012 ohms at 100kHz, a figure that is significantly lower than
that achieved by comparable tantalum devices. In applications where
multiple tantalum parts are being replaced, cost and space savings are
possible when using NSP capacitors, as fewer devices are required. An
increased ripple current rating of up to 3.0A rms (100kHz, +105°C), is
another feature of devices from the improved specification NSP range.
Parts are supplied in flat top resin chip packages that measure 7.3 x
4.3mm, with capacitance values ranging from 2.2µF to 390µF and voltages
between 2.0V DC and 16.0V DC. In addition to having a wide operating
temperature range of -40°C to +105°C, the NSP series also has a long life
expectancy.

The new edition of the NIC catalogue provides a comprehensive guide to the
complete range of components available from the passives specialist. Also
included is a time saving cross-reference guide, which helps design
engineers by listing information about equivalent parts from the main
suppliers in each product category. All of NIC Eurotech's newly introduced
product ranges are detailed in the catalogue. These include low ESR parts
such as the NTP surface mount polymer tantalum range and NMC-L ferrite
chip beads. In order to reflect current market trends, all surface mount
components have been grouped together at the front of the catalogue. A
section giving technical and application information about aluminum
electrolytic capacitors, and a metric conversion table completes the
catalogue contents.

Surface mount, solid
polymer, aluminum electrolytic capacitors in the
NSPZ range are ideally suited to low voltage, high current power
management applications. Ultra-low ESR and impedance, coupled with high
ripple current are the key features. Measured valnes for ESR are as low as
0.025 Ohms. Ripple current values are measured at 105°C and 100kHz. The
capacitors are housed in leadless cylindrical packages with dimensions
ranging from 6.3mm diameter x 6mm up to 10mm diameter x 8mm. Capacitance
values from 15µF to 680µF, and voltage ratings of between 4V and 25Vdc
mean that the requirements of most applications can be met. A broad
operating range of -55°C to +105°C further enhances suitability for use in
a wide range of electronic circuits and equipment. Parts are supplied in a
tape and reel format appropriate for pick and place manufacturing systems.
The NSPZ range has been designed to be compatible with reflow soldering
processes.

High Current Ferrite Chip Beads - suit harsh environments
Nov 2001
Passive components specialist NIC Eurotech offers high current versions of
its popular NCB range of ferrite chip beads. With a maximum current rating
of up to 6 A and a wide operating temperature range of between -40°C and
+125°C, the
NCB-H series is ideally suited to applications in harsh
environments. The devices give effective EMI and RFI suppression at up to
1 GHz. The range also offers high impedance values over a wide frequency
range. Quoted reference values are between 10 ohms and 125 ohms at 100MHz.
Available in case sizes ranging from 0603 to 1812, the ferrite chip beads
feature nickel barrier terminations with a solder plate finish to help
ensure a good solder joint. Parts are supplied taped and reeled at a pitch
of 4mm, and are fully compatible with automatic pick and place equipment.

Ceramic Chip Capacitors - suit Bluetooth applications
Sept 2001
NIC Eurotech has added a range of low ESR multilayer ceramic chip
capacitors to its portfolio of products. With ESR as low as 0.30 Ohm for
capacitance values of between 22pF and 47pF at 500MHz, the
NMC-L series is
ideally suited to high speed, high frequency applications such as those
found in Bluetooth products. Manufactured using ultra stable, low loss
NPO/COG dielectric, the devices are available with values ranging from
0.5pF to 47pF. Both 50 Vdc and 100 Vdc rated parts are available. A broad
operating temperature range of -55°C to +125°C makes them suitable for use
in most environments. Capacitance stability is also very high with a
figure of 0 ±30ppm/°C quoted across the temperature range. The NMC-L range
is offered in both 0603 and 0805 case sizes making placement easy in
applications where printed circuit boards can be extremely densely
populated. An even smaller 0402 version is currently in development.
Nickel barrier terminations and stringent quality controls in the
manufacturing process mean that NMC-L ceramic chip capacitors have
excellent mechanical strength. This is particularly important in portable
communications applications where equipment has to meet tough vibration
and drop test specifications. Supplied in tape and reel packaging, the
range is compatible with both reflow and flow soldering processes.

Speed performance from improved arrays
May 2001
Available from NIC Components is a range of 0805 size ceramic chip
capacitor arrays that features reduced trace distance, which is said to
improve their performance in high speed applications. Designated the
NCA
series, these capacitors have a footprint of 2 by 1.25mm and provide four
isolated same-capacitance-value elements on a 0.5mm spacing. The small
footprint requires less board space, reducing the total cost of both the
board and end product, the company states. Costs associated to assembly
are also reduced, as there is only one placement instead of four. NPO and
X7R ceramic dielectrics cover capacitance values from 10pF to 0.10µF, with
tolerances of 5 to 10%. Voltage ratings from 10 to 100V DC are available,
while the operating temperature range is from -55 to 125°C. The devices
are supplied on paper tape and are compatible with auto pick-and-place and
reflow soldering processes.
