Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors -
Guidance in Selecting & Specifying by Type & Ratings

Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors belong to the family of electrolytic capacitors and have the following
characteristics:
  • They are Polarized with Anode (+) and Cathode (-) terminals
  • They dominate higher capacitance values (0.47uF to 82,000uF) and voltages from 2.5VDC ~ 450VDC
  • They are very widely used as they offer lowest cost per capacitance - voltage value
  • They are available in both surface mount and leaded construction
  • The are fixed capacitance value (their value is not user variable) with ±20% tolerance (M) standard

    Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are used in virtually every segment of the electronics industry

    Any product that "plugs into the wall" (receives power from the utility company) likely uses aluminum electrolytic capacitors in the power circuitry, converting AC voltage into continuous DC voltage

    Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are widely used to provide temporary voltage hold-up (they act as short-term energy sources) during transition periods (high load, line droops, transient events) within most electrical circuits

  • Energy storage / power source smoothing (voltage hold-up)
  • Power source noise filtering applications (shunts noise to ground)
  • AC signal bypass/filtering applications (shunts noise to ground)
  • Arc suppression (reduces high energy transients)
  • Also used (in combination with other devices) in circuit timing, filtering or tuning
  • Circuit coupling (passes AC and blocks DC)

  • Aluminum Capacitor Selection Steps:

    1
    . Select type - construction (See below table)

    2. Determine capacitor lifetime in circuit operation; number of hours @ operational temperature (°C)

    L1 = Rated Lifetime (hours) at Maximum Rated Temperature (T1)
    L2 = Estimated Lifetime (hours) at Operating Temperature (T2)
    T1 = Maximum Rated Temperature (°C)
    T2 = Operating Temperature (°C)
